Update, 1 October 2020

We are looking forward to welcoming our students and staff back to campus over the coming weeks.

As previously advised, Melbourne Grammar School is planning a staged return to on-campus learning over the course of Term IV, in accordance with the announcements made by the Premier of Victoria last Sunday.

Our Executive team has been meeting regularly to develop our return to campus plans, in which the health and wellbeing of our students and staff will continue to be our highest priority and we draw on appropriate State Government legislation, guidelines and restrictions. These plans relate to the whole School and are summarised here. We encourage you to read the document titled Parent and Student COVID-19 Term IV Return to Campus Plan 1 Oct 2020 carefully. These arrangements will be updated as required, in line with any updated advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer, and our own monitoring and review. More specific updates will continue to be provided by your Head of Campus and the Head of Boarding, as appropriate.

As you know, School Council decided to provide tuition fee rebates in Terms II and III to support our families as we all adjusted to the challenges presented by the sudden and unprecedented impacts of COVID-19, including a swift transition to off-campus learning. In addition, boarding fees were only charged for the periods when students were in residence. These fee adjustments were thoroughly considered because they constituted a substantial financial commitment for the School, and as previously communicated by School Council, would not be sustainable.

Given the staged return to on-campus operations from the start of Term IV, School Council has confirmed that:

  • Full tuition fees will apply for Term IV 2020 for Prep to Year 6 and Years 11 and 12.
  • A 5% rebate against net tuition fees will apply for Years 7 to 10, for Term IV fees only, given the uncertainty still surrounding the approved date for these students to resume on-campus studies.
  • The existing policy regarding boarding fees will continue; that is, boarding fees will only be charged where the boarding house is open and boarders are in residence.
  • Tuition fee rebates will not be provided in 2021.

These decisions will be reflected in Term IV fee accounts, which will be issued next week.

We will continue to provide short term, means tested and confidential financial support for those families whose financial situations have been impacted by COVID-19 and require support for their children to remain at school. We also acknowledge with gratitude, the donations received from our school community for the Melbourne Grammar School Fees Assistance Fund. All monies received into this Fund have been fully utilised in supporting Melbourne Grammar families who have needed help during this difficult time. The gratitude expressed by these families, and the impact these donations have had on the futures of their children, are both humbling and inspiring, yet again demonstrating the strength and compassion of our School community.

All of us – students, staff and parents – want to resume full on-campus operations as soon as possible. What we know is that we must proceed thoughtfully and carefully, recognising that the restrictions that remain in place will cause inconvenience to all of us.
